I heard rainy season is starting so I will have to be prepared to fight off the mosquitos.
My roomate Michelle is there right now and she told me the whole camp was moved from the airport to a gigantic house with electricity and running water, that is quite an upgrade i must say. Personally i thought it was more exciting to be living next to a runway and jogging by planes taking off but thats just me. :)

I have been thinking of making a "things to take to Haiti" list because I have been asked a lot in terms of what do you need to survive down there. Soooo.... if you are going as a volunteer minister to our camp, you need to take the following:

personal clothing:

2 pairs of sneakers/converse/tennis shoes
1 pair of flip flops (for the shower)
3 pairs of jeans/paratrooper pants hahaha
2 pairs of stretch pants
(if available some light linen type pants)
2 or 3 shorts, depending on how long you are going
if you are going for 14 days, then 7 pairs of underwear and socks and you just wash them weekly
pony tail bands for girls
bobby pins to keep hair out of face
head bands are useful too
a couple of long sleeve light cotton shirts
several tank tops, light colors to not attract heat (black is not a great idea)
sports bras (for girls of course hhaha)
10 pairs of socks (if you are going for 2 weeks)
a bathing suit (just in case you go to the beach with the orphanage :)
a baseball cap type hat or just a regular hat
sunglasses

hygiene supplies:
little travel size bags of laundry detergent (liquid tide)
1 bar of soap
travel size shampoo and conditioner
shaving cream if needed
1 razor
a 4 pack of toilet paper
little travel size kleenex
travel size antibacterial gel
toothbrush
deodorant

food supplies:
protein bars
EMERGENC packets (a whole box, super great for staying hydrated)
cell salts
clif bars
8 tuna cans (if your staying 14 days)

camping gear:
sleeping bag
a camelback
sleeping like an airmat or a pad (REI sells them)
pillow (small if you can get it in a little size)
flashlight
a few extra batteries
2 Walkie talkies (very useful to stay in contact with group)
Duffel bag
Rope (for a clothing line)
Knife
Baby wipes (1 package, good for cleaning )
Pepper spray
$300 cash
Money belt

NERD Supplies:
Burnable CDs.
Flash drives
Flip camera
Still camera
Big envelope
Sharpie
Packing tape.
CD cases
small laptop (those little dell ones)

and of course!!! your passport!

so i think this is about as good as it gets,

i didnt include a lot of things which you would think that you would need to take but they have them supplied there like sunblock, food, more snacks, vitamins (b1, b complex, calmag, etc...) there is a whole MLO area which has all those basic things, in fact if you forget your toothbrush for example they have that, or even flip flops, anyway they have almost all of those things but bring your one just so you can choose what you like :)

okidoke i think this will help anyone planning to go!

see you in april :)

catching up tv and vm news!

Wow, i heard about this news, but this. is. just. Thought you might like to read it so here it is:

It's late, I'm so ridiculously tired but I'm still up. Jeez luiz, I'm glad I took a shower earlier today before everyone got back to camp because we have our camp set up at the airport right next to the airplane take off tarmac. So basically we have these wooden square walls with a blue plastic tarp that covers you while you shower with you ONE QUARTER of a bucket of WATER! Try shaving your legs with that! Anyway back to my story, every time you are showering, if a plane takes off, you have to hold the tarp down or it will fly up and the plane will see you standing butt-naked next to them hahaha, crazy huh?

On another note, I have more people on my general hospital team now, it's getting bigger and bigger which is a good thing because when people have a problem now at the hospital, they grab one of our guys so we are so busy.

The Spanish firefighters and I are working together too to get water in all the buildings, good thing is I'm friendly with them so they help us ALL the time, one guy even says that he will help me out but then he will marry me later haha pretty direct I must say.

I met the sweeeeeeetest old lady, she kept saying "Merci, Sugar Momma" and kissing my hands. Its so sad because you want to hug and kiss everyone but you can't because apparently over 50% of the population has AIDS.

This all sounds crazy but here it has practically become "a going to the office every day" thingie.

Ok I'm about to pass out I have to go pee in a "makeshift" bathroom which is a hole in the ground, wish me luck, don't want to fall in.

I'll update tomorrow, hope it's not too hot.

Night night.

P.S. Need to get some pic's of the earthquake damaged buildings, you don't believe it till you see it. 1 out of 2 buildings AT LEAST have collapsed. Everything is almost level. : ( It's terrible! These people really need everyone's help.

Awesome video clip from Haiti!

Back from Haiti - back to "reality"?

Is this really reality what we live in? The roads, the buses, cars, perfumes, restaurants... As I was walking through the duty free shops at the airport today I realized how fake the modern world seems to me now. Hunger is now real to me, thirst is more real, but not what new bag i'm going to buy, that doesn't seem to matter anymore. Its almost as if what my old reality was, is no longer existent in my mind.

This short time I've been back from Haiti, I still have my thoughts over there and I keep comparing life here, to life there. Frankly, there's nothing to compare. They have nothing and we have everything. The cold hard truth that i got snapped into me is that my life here in the "real world" is so simple, easy and comfortable, i have running hot water, food in a refrigerator and clothes hung up in a closet, its almost shocking to me that I never really noticed those details before and it makes me sad to think i didn't appreciate them either. I feel so gratified to know i will have food tomorrow and a place to stay, and a mother to hug.

There were so many orphans everywhere that would've given anything to just have their mother again to say I love you, and not only did they lose their home, but they lost their mother too.

So I say sit down and take a minute to really reflect on what you have (i did this) and to truly appreciate it because I can say this for a fact, I have changed, and I will never be the same. The problems i used have dont seem like such problems anymore and physical objects like ipods, cell phones, tvs or even just clothes are now, the least of my worries. I can see that life is more than just the material stuff. All that can be destroyed in a heartbeat just how it happened in Haiti and when you lose all your material objects and are still standing and breathing, with all 4 limbs, Id say your a pretty rich person.

My lesson was that life has nothing to do with the material, that isn't actually important and I think this is an important thing for me because now I know where my future efforts in life will head, not towards bigger and better cars but towards improving myself and improving others.

With 100% certainty, there is nothing more gratifying than knowing that you truly helped someone and made a difference in their life and after this trip to Haiti I know this wont be the last time I help in something like this, it has changed me forever, I know I was able to make a difference and I will never see life the same.

HAITIAN TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

Yesterday was my last day in haiti, i got to the airport at 8:30 am and waited to be put in the "american citizen evacuation line" Its getting harder and harder to leave on the american evacuation flights because the planes are coming more sporadically. (i recommend you buy a ticket through santo domingo for your return flying arrangements) It took till 12 am to get on the plane, 13 hours later i was on a C-17 headed for Charleston, South Carolina. The plane ride was very cool, it felt like i was going to the moon because there were no pretty covers on anything like in a regular plane, here you could see all the air ducts, the cement floor and our race car driver type seats on the edges of the whole plane sitting with our backs to the walls, and to top that off we had airforce guys in green jumpsuits as the "pseudo flight attendants". We entered the plane from the back, there was a giant opening where i suppose they drive army vehicles onto the plane and that's where we got on. Pretty awesome i must admit ;)

Inside of evacuation plane

We arrived at 2:30 am and i was exhausted. I do have to say this though, the American Red Cross was beyond fantastic in Charleston. When the C-17 landed the Red Cross people and medical team got on the plane and handed everyone blankets, when we walked into the airport we were greeted with smiles and a lot of "how are you feeling? welcome home, good to have you back" which let me tell you feels amazing when you just spent a whole day trying to get out of an airport and 2 weeks surrounded by really terrible occurrences. So they treated myself and everyone else like royalty. When i got into the terminal, i was offered food, water, CHIPS!!! CHIPS!! ahhh i had 3 bags, fritos, doritos and cheetos, they tasted oh soo good. Everything was so complete that there were even complimentary personal care bags that had toothpaste, a comb, shampoo, a little towel, etc etc... Anyway i thought it was just the nicest thing ever to receive us in such a warm fashion, it really did make my travels that much easier so thank you Red Cross for that.

After that little shin dig, i had to figure out how i was gonna get out of Charleston, South Carolina which for the record i had never even heard of and at 2 am wasn't too excited to figure it out. So i booked a flight with the help of robert hogg, my right hand man, and i flew to north carolina at 7 am, (slept the whole way and this is totally gross but i'll say it anyway, i fell asleep so profoundly that i had a little drool rolling down my cheek when i woke up) and took another flight at 9:30 am to mexico city and arrived at 2 pm and about ready to pass out.

So there u go, if you want to fly out of Haiti using the evacuation flights, arrive VERY early and u will have more chances of getting out faster, i recommend 6:30 am arriving at the airport.

Next stop: refugee camp

Today was a new experience! A group of us went out to a refugee camp, delivering food and medical supplies, helping them organize. It was an open plot of land in a “residential” type area, kind of the equivalent “of a suburban area where each house is side by side and there is grass in the front", except that here the houses are totally destroyed and there is a lot of uncut grass and rocky dirt road and goats running around.

Anyway, the camp was a bunch of sheets, made onto square huts and some other makeshift tents. There was a small herd of goats, a water pump and about 100 people just hanging around.

We got them lived up and gave them medical attention (90 in total) I gave some people assists. I also carried tons of babies.

Next we went to the worst slum I have ever been to in my whole entire life. It was a bunch of windy dirt roads next to a big river totally covered in trash, the few buildings buildings there were mainly demolished yet people were still living inside them. We went there to help some people who had open wounds, it was a quick stop but I enjoyed it so much because they just prepared for church service, so of course we went in and had a blast singing and waving my hands in the air with all the other Church people - it broke me down seeing these people all dressed up for Church even after everything they have gone through.

It was quite a different experience, after two weeks work in the intensive care unit.

:) well, I'm pooped, off to bed. I am going to a refugee camp tomorrow again. Hope it goes well.

P.S. Please come volunteers! We need more hands.

P.S. P.S. Medical supplies are desperately needed here and people to give assist to!!!!

Ellen

Sunday morning in the Scientology VM camp - this is a sad blog

This is a sad blog. I left the General Hospital in Port au Prince yesterday to help building up teams in refugee camps. So I will be in a different area today and it is pretty sad because they still need volunteers, yet we don't have enough people to care for everybody there.

The hospital kitchen is now working well but it is very possible that they might stop cooking for the patients after we leave, meaning that the employees would only cook for the doctors and employees of the hospital. What a horrible thought. The meals we have been giving aren't even very filling – just a big kettle of soup with white rice, a strange blend of liquefied beans and a tiny piece of hot dog in a red Creole sauce. This is their only meal of the day. Another Volunteer Ministers team is working to get them better food daily and I hope they will succeed.

If you really want to volunteer in Haiti, don't think twice about it, right now is when they really need the help. Not only that, but (it sounds cliché) it is life changing. I don't look at the last bite of food the same way I used to. I never waste water anymore because I know there are thousands of little kids dying of thirst. When I would go to the hospital, little kids would come up to the car and say “water” and others would poke their little bellies and look at you, implying they haven't eaten in days. It is a terrible feeling being unable to help someone who truly needs it. Sometimes I don't even have water to drink at the hospital so you just have to harden your heart and say no once in a while. If we had more food and water here, it wouldn't be a problem, so please spread the word...they need help.

On another point, I helped at an orphanage today that is rebuilt by a Haitian aid organization, and it is so sweet. It is located at the back of this large lot of land. The front of it is just full of rusty old school buses zigzagged around and doorless cars with no tires. Right behind all that is an open field with tall grass. To the far back left, there are seven tents where the children live now. In front of that is a big yellow VM tent where all the kids get medical care (and they get their hair done, too!). In front of that is a large clothesline and then the rest of the space is just open and the kids run around playing soccer.

ORPHAN kids

It needs a lot of help, but it is improving every day. One of the US doctors who is working with the Haitian team wants to adopt one of the orphans.

Ooh, wow! Eggs are being cooked for breakfast! I think I need a new job, ha-ha, I walk in and it's hilarious.because everyone knows us by name. It is the fourth day we have delivered food and water to the entire hospital. 900 people total, with me leading the troops. My volunteers are running the radiology dept and we have other people serving water all day long.

I got my hair done by a Haitian woman, Haitian style. They were sitting in the hospital doing each others hair around 8 am and I wasn't going to let that opportunity slip by, so I found myself a translator and asked them to do my hair in corn rows. After awhile, I had Haitians taking pictures of ME, which is ironic.

Holy cow, I ate a real meal last night. I swear I looked like a starving child that hadn't eaten in two weeks. I had three plates, not one, not two, but three plates of Creole food and afterwards I felt like a cow, but a satisfied one.

Mikey, Niko and I found a restaurant in the middle of a slum in Port au Prince. It was the most bizarre thing, as outside there were tent cities and people sleeping under trees. Then right behind this tall gate, there was this paradise of a hotel with palm trees, internet connection and a buffet. The last part was the thing I was excited about.

We got to sleep at the hotel as we had no ride back to the camp. Ha Ha, lousy excuse to sleep in a real bed . For the record, there is only ventilation till 12am, so don't get excited.

Ellen signing off

A short one - I missed John Travolta coming to visit Haiti

We had a busy day, it was so humid and tough but oh well, you have to deal with it.

Ran around and helped the food get going at the hospital. It’s amazing but we made it so that there were staples in the kitchen but it was not being cooked, freshly prepared food is a rare occurrence here and now. Today I talked to a lot of people and got 1,000 rations of food for two weeks secured for the General Hospital! Yey!

Last night John Travolta came to drop off medical supplies, it was very nice to him to do it. I couldn’t stick around to see him since I was so tired so I went to my tent and passed out. None the less it was cool and all the local neighbors went to see him.

It was kind of cloudy today so my “airport runway” shower was pretty brutal, super cold and windy. There are now about 30 new doctors at our tent area so the shower line looks as a Six Flags Roller-Coaster line. It reminds me a little of the to show Survivor.

I was standing there with a little square towel trying to stay balanced on the wood planks while I dried off and I almost fell out of the shower area into the open field that would have been quite a scene!

I have a private stash of tuna which seems to be quite a commodity around here so I am keeping an eye on those for sure!

Lots to do tomorrow. We arrived at the hospital and hit the ground running. I say hospital, but the building was so unstable that all the patients were outdoors - some in tents, some under trees, others just baking in the open sun.

I started off giving assists. Most of the people were amputees, others were severely disfigured, many had open wounds that were still bleeding. They had huge wins from the assists, and they were so vocally appreciative that we often drew crowds of 10-15 people. Every person asked me to come back tomorrow to teach them and give them more assists. I literally sprinted from one assist to another. Family members patiently waited and then grabbed me the moment I finished an assist and took me to their loved one. One family of nine wouldn't let me leave until I had given all of them an assist.

I spent half the day directly helping the doctors. I washed patients and fed those who could not feed themselves. I massaged atrophied muscles and even got people to sing to lift their spirits and make them feel better. One about 90-year-old woman who had just had her leg amputated and was severely out of it all of a sudden started tapping my leg and even sang along a bit.

Everyone I met today was so eager to help and be helped. It was inspiring to work beside such dedicated doctors and nurses. Yes, the day was full of "impossibles" that had to be solved, but I didn't face anything that could not be overcome.

And last, an experience I will never forget. In one of the tents was a patient we call "Miracle Man." This man absolutely should not still be alive - his body was full of maggots, limbs had been amputated, and he was so emaciated that he looked like a skeleton. Reporters and doctors were pointing and discussing him all day, but I noticed that no one was actually helping him.

Stephanie (another Volunteer Minister) and I found some baby food, water, and syringes to feed him with. We cradled, fed him, sang to him, and gave him assists. Although he could barely speak, his gratitude was palpable.

A couple of hours later I went back to him and found no one had tended to him since I left. I got right back to feeding him, singing to him and giving him assists. After a few minutes, this "ghost" snapped out of the faraway daze he was in and was completely "there." He told me that he wanted to live! He mumbled something in Creole that I didn't understand, but the amputee in the next bed told me he was saying that I was his sister. At first I thought that he was confusing me with his sister, but the neighbor continued to translate: the man I had cared for was telling me that he has absolutely no one in the world, and now I am his sister, I am his angel, and now he wants to live! He cried when I left. (I did not want to leave, but there is a curfew here and it is enforced.) Dictated on the phone...!!!!

Hi! Here's what is happening!

We landed last night, we landed at 1 or 2am. We had to get all our cargo from the airplane ourselves. Literally, I climbed into the cargo pit and were the one throwing the things off the airplane. We made an assembly line to receive it all.

We have food, gear and water but you still have to figure out what you need because there is no shops or something. The logistics of where, what everyone is doing is still a little bit messy but it’s okay.

We went to the hospital today all day long. I was responsible of the team that went to the hospital and we were there from about 11am to 7pm. The hospital, this is the general hospital, the biggest hospital in the area. All the buildings were evacuated because of the 6.1 earthquake that happened a couple of days ago so people, everybody was outside, laying in the park, which is a giant square, that hospital, has a giant park in the middle, so everyone is laying in the park.

So literally you would be walking on the sidewalk and there is patients sitting there with their legs amputated. Pretty intense, and all the people were outside, some of them had just given birth. And some passed out after they gave birth. We got 16 Scientology Volunteer Ministers including myself to go there and we gave easily, not exaggerated, about 80 or 90 assists. Just non-stop giving assists to everybody, and all in French. There were people that literally, I was giving an assist to one lady who had – no joke – holes the size of two golf balls, that deep in her leg that you could see her bones. Just a giant hollow spot in her leg from what I guess has been stabbed in her leg. And she couldn’t feel her knee when I first started giving her the assist, every time when I touched her in that area she, I would say “feel my finger”, she couldn’t feel that area. By the time we finished she could feel that area. Really cool things that.

Basically we did that and we established this thing with one of the main hospitals, the Director of Sanitation for Haiti basically told us “we want you to help us”, and work in there with the doctors. So we went into ICU [Intensive Care Unit], five of us, which means “Intensive Care Unit”, but I am talking really intensive care unit, and the five of us were in there. I was in charge of those five people, and we took care of them, made sure they got food, made sure they were getting taken care of. We were carrying people on stretchers all around the place, taking them to get x-rays and we were really in. there. With our hands full. One time we were the ones that took two people to the ward that had just died!!!

It’s quite a little war zone. But you know what, everything is really organized and everybody says “cool, these guys seem to know what they are doing and they are helping”. So, they were saying “Scientology, what are you guys doing here?” And we “we’re here to help”. And they: “cool”. Yeah.

It’s so bizarre. I was one of the people who had to check the pulse of one of the people that died. And I was “she’s dead now, alright”. I am getting through with everything I see and let me tell you I saw some really bad stuff.

There was a guy that, if you stopped shaking him he would die! So I sat there shaking him for half an hour because if he fell asleep he would die, right. And I am saying “Jean-Pierre, bon jour! Bon Jour!” And shake him to keep him alive. I ended up doing this for half an hour and he was pretty much unconscious when I arrived and when I left he was sitting up saying “I love America!”. And that was really cool and he obviously did not die, right!

So basically that’s what happens and that’s what we did with that. Same five people are going to be there all week helping run that ICU unit. Together with the Doctor Brown. And we actually have a nighttime team as well. We have two Volunteer Ministers that are staying there at night, from 7pm to 7am. They are in charge of 24 Intensive Care Unit people.

More when I can get to a phone again! We need to get internet up soon so I can get to my emails!!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ellenthevm.blogspot.com/2010/01/heavy-stuff-in-haiti-hope-this-makes-it.html' title='Heavy stuff in Haiti - hope this makes it on the blog!!!! My phone does not work at all! We landed about 2am local time, had to unload the plane ourselves! I was inside the cargo bay, we built a chain to get all the luggage out... A lot of military too. The VMs were happy to see us and the doctors coming to help the project! They have a big tent, about 100x30 foot, for supplies and then we have our tents near the tarmac. meal before i return from haiti, a friend and i went to spagos in bev hills and ate yummy yummy food, only downfall were the snoots all around us hahaha, one dude was wearing sun glasses inside the restaurant like at 8pm, what a LOSERRR! ahhh hate those people!
anyway now im gonna go be with mami for a little bit, and try to get her to be calm about me boarding a plane to haiti, i can see where she is coming from...frankly id be the same way if a crazy kid of mine was leaving to Haiti.
i have all my things packed, it looks like i am leaving to war, literally have 60 tuna cans, a million guaze pads, tons and tons of water in camel backs, nuts, clif bars etc etc etc, oh and hundreds of baby wipes which is how i will be showering :)

so im
